In the third photo, Sarah is photographed on the porch of the one room schoolhouse her grandmother, great grandmother and family attended. During a time when it was prohibited for people of color to read and write, the schoolhouse was a refuge for those wanting to further their education and life's circumstances. The schoolhouse is now a historic monument in the state of Mississippi.
